One of the wheels of Abdullah’s minibus becomes loose and falls in a pit before he reaches the village. While awaiting help to arrive, Abdullah gets off the car and goes by the creek to drink water. For every gulp he drinks a cobblestone falls from the sky beside him. Abdullah grabs one of the stones from the water and puts in his pocket. On the way to get back on his minibus he draws a face on the farm’s new scarecrow and puts his hat on its head.

From this point on bizarre incidences happen in the village. Nanny Soghra appears on the farm barefoot, frothing at the mouth. Taghi, the farm’s irrigator who is guarding the watering system at night as usual, suddenly becomes possessed. Everything is changing in the village. Nargess the village headman’s daughter who’s been promised to marry off Abdullah gets drawn to the scarecrow. The school principal who is not a local, witnesses this chaos more than others do and worries over anticipation of a horrible occurrence. Abdullah, however, does not believe in the scarecrow superstition and to prove what he believes he visits the scarecrow at night to completely uproot it but in the dark of the night something attacks him and injures his foot. Abdullah is taken home and being cared for. When the doctor visits him it’s a little too late and doctor says the foot has become infected and must be amputated. Abdullah refuses and doesn’t let his foot to be severed but continues to live like a single-footed scarecrow for the rest of his life.

Abdullah hands the cobblestone he had gotten from the creek to the school principal and accepts death.
